Jack Holderfield Obituary

Jack D. Holderfield passed away peacefully on April 17, 2023, at the Anchor in Marion.

He was born to Alberta Cash and Floyd Holderfield on July 9, 1940.

Jack married Donna Kay ‘Zoeller’ Holderfield on June 20, 1959. Together they shared 63 years of marriage.

He is survived by his wife, Kay, his son, Mark Alan (Kelly) and grandson, Logan Michael, his brothers, Joe (Marsha) and Jim (Doris) Holderfield.

He was a Seargent in the United States Army Reserves from 1962-1968.

Jack was baptized at Second Baptist Church in his early years and later he and Kay attended the First Presbyterian Church in Marion.

His working career, all self-taught, included sign painting for Herman Roberts and later he became a co-owner of the company.  He also worked as a photographer for SIU-C.  He also taught crime scene photography.  He was presented a Center for Excellence Award at the November College Council meeting.  Mr. Holderfield was an instructor in the Continuing Education Department since 1971, beginning his tenure in the old barracks buildings under Dr. Nathan Ivey’s presidency.  He taught hundreds of students over the past 40 years in continuing education basic photography, crime scene photography, and sign painting classes.

Mr. Holderfield retired from the Photography Department at SIUC in 2000. His photographs have appeared on the cover of Woman’s Day magazine (1989) and in Your Prom magazine (1991).  He also took wedding and senior pictures for many throughout the region.

Associate Dean Barry Hancock said, “Jack Holderfield is the type of instructor that has helped give John A. Logan College the excellent reputation we have today.” Center for Excellence Awards are intended to honor College employees for going above and beyond their normal duties to enhance teaching, learning, and leadership.

He greatly enjoyed being a part of the breakfast group at Triple E (Riley’s) each morning and riding Harley Davidson motorcycles and family gatherings. He was a member of the Egyptian Gun Club.

He will be missed by family on both sides and his friends.
